The Start of Our Story

This was the first picture I took, the first weekend I stayed at the farm.

In 2011, I left the United States on an adventure.  I was supposed to backpack across the South America in about six months, head back home, then figure out what to do next, deep down inside I kinda new I wouldn’t leave. What actually happened is a lil more crazy. I started this adventure in Bogota, Colombia, and was headed south.  Got to the Ecuadorian border, a little underwhelmed.  Ecuador was the one country I was not interested in seeing.  Not really sure why I felt that way. I heard about Otavalo, which I was told by Lonely Planet was the center of the indigenous community in Ecuador, and had this huge market every Saturday.  I had a weekend to kill before I was expected at a volunteer gig, so I thought I’d stop.  I was trying to make this trip as cheap as possible, and was a part of a site called “Couchsurfing.” On this web site people who are traveling can connect with people who have some extra space and will host these travelers. It’s a pretty rad site cause you get a more authentic experience, and it’s free, you should check it out.
Anywho I searched couchsurfing for a host in the area. Only one showed up, Mr. Shawn Geer.  Except that he lived about 15 minutes away from the city.  I decided to email him and if he answered by the time I got there I would stay, if he didn’t I would find a hostel.  He answered, I stayed, the farm instantly felt like home. I totally underestimated how much I would love Ecuador, the people and their culture. Of course there has been some bumps in the road, there always is. I didn’t want to give up my trip, was worried about money I didn’t have, ect. But there are always excuses not to make a huge leap of faith, no matter how sure you feel about it. Now we are happily married, living our dream life, with our beautiful little family. Who knew I could get everything I’ve ever wanted?
